I’ve been living here for almost five months now, an sometimes I really feel I’ve entered a fairytale when I go for my morning walk!
Squirrel
A great sighting and a great photo doesn’t always have to be a lion or a leopard. This little squirrel was so cute, sitting on a rock. Lesson learnt: Enjoy the small things in life!
Diederik cuckoo
One of the beautiful cuckoos that are summer visitors to South Africa. Once the rains start, the calls of the cuckoos can be heard everywhere in the bush. This glorious green bird is called the Diederik cuckoo, because its name sounds like the Dutch/Afrikaans name Diederik: It calls “Die- die- diederik!” Unfortunately hearing cuckoos is much easier than actually seeing them, so I was very happy when this one perched on a branch for a moment.

The day after World Lion Day… Ah, it’s never too late to post a picture of a lion, is it?
This lion had claimed the carcass of an elephant that died of natural causes. He was very aware of his surroundings, scanning the bush and even the sky for other interested parties.

A majestic bull elephant in Madikwe Game Reserve. These animals are so big and so impressive! I know they are often called gentle giants, but for me the emphasis is on giant, and not so much on the gentle. If such an elephant wants to go somewhere, he will, no matter whether your car is in the way…
